Ingredients
  • Split Pigeon Peas - 1/4 cup
  • Wheat Flour (atta) - 1/4 cup
  • Gram Flour (Besan) - 2 Tbsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1 Tbsp
  • Red Chili Powder - 1/4 Tbsp
  • Asafoetida - 2 Pinches
  • Olive Oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Desi Ghee - 1 Tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds - 1/2 Tbsp
  • Cumin Seeds - 1 Tbsp
  • Whole Dry Red Chili - 2
  • Curry Leaves - 6-8
  • Coriander Leaves (Finely Chopped) - 2 Tbsp
  • Salt – As Per the Taste
  • Dal dhokli is a traditional dish of Gujarat. Dal dhokli recipe is generally prepared with dals and wheat flour as base ingredients. Even though this one-pot meal is one of the classic and must-try Gujarati dishes. It has a soft texture dhokli that is fully submerged in a semi-thick gravy of dal and has a mild sweet & spicy taste. 

    Despite being easy to prepare, it has healthy and stomach-filling properties. So, let’s learn more about its preparation and the ingredients that can be used. 

    How To Prepare Dal Dhokli

    Let’s segregate the recipe to understand the preparation more clearly.  

    1. To Make the Dal

    • Firstly, boil the dal in a pressure cooker till the pigeon peas get soft. Then, keep it aside.
    • In the meantime, heat 1 tbsp ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds, asafoetida, garlic ginger paste, and finally, the boiled dal.
    • Also, add turmeric powder, chili powder, a pinch of jaggery, salt, and curry leaves. Then, boil.

    Note: You can add any seasonal vegetables also.

    2. To Make the Dhokli

    • To begin with, take flour (atta), besan, add salt, turmeric, red chili powder, a pinch of asafoetida, 1-2tbsp of oil, and mix it with flour. After mixing, prepare a dough and knead it well.
    • Secondly, roll out small round-shaped rotis or in any shape which is comfortable for you to roll and drop them into the boiled dal mixture.
    • When all the dhokli pieces are put in, boil the dal for a further 15 minutes on a low flame. 
    • Finally, your dal dhokli is ready to serve. Sprinkle some coriander leaves to garnish and serve hot.
