Honey For Weight Loss

Table of content

Honey is often promoted as the healthy superfood from heaven. Restaurants promote shakes and drinks with honey on the healthier side of their menu. Honey is often marketed as a healthy alternative to sugar. It is because of its antioxidants, phenolic acids, and flavonoids rich profile. But is it worth enough to consume honey for weight loss?

To answer that question let us first understand what is honey.

Honey is approximately 80% sugar and no more than 18% water. A single tablespoon (21 grams) of honey typically has 64 calories and 17 grams of carbs with little to no fat, fiber, and protein.
So you see this is where the problem lies. 80% of the composition is sugar. This amount of sugar leads to a number of diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular problems, obesity, etc.

A Big No For Diabetics

Despite the health benefits that may be associated with honey, it’s high in sugar. Honey is approximately 80% sugar and no more than 18% water and this sugar is not easily digestible. It can cause your blood sugar levels to spike as well as insulin resulting in increased hunger. Thus, this is extremely dangerous for diabetic patients.

Now that we’re clear on why honey for weight loss is not the right choice, let’s bust a common myth you have regarding consumption.

Myth – But I have heard Honey with lukewarm water helps in weight loss

Reality – Well it’s the Lukewarm Lemon Water that does the trick

Honey is high in sugar and calories packing approximately 64 calories into a single tablespoon (21 grams). While this may not seem like much, even a few servings per day can cause the calories to stack up.
Consuming honey leads to weight gain especially if other dietary modifications are not made to account for these extra calories.

Honey In The Markets Is Not The Same As Natural Honey

Honey available in stores can be unhealthy, even more unhealthy than sugar and sugar alternatives. This honey is heated and processed in a factory, it is not the same honey that bees put in their hives. It can be preserved for a long time this way. Honey, when heated, loses most of its vitamins and minerals, destroying the sole purpose of choosing it over sugar.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR KIDS UNDER 1 YEAR OF AGE

Raw honey carries harmful bacteria like Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium is particularly responsible for causing infection in babies less than a year old.

Possible causes of this bacterium:

  • Constipation,
  • Slow breathing,
  • Sagging eyelids,
  • Absence of gagging,
  • Loss of head control,
  • Paralysis that spreads downwards,
  • Poor feeding,
  • Lethargy and a weak cry.
