  • 1 cup of toor dal (pigeon peas)
  • 1 cup of finely chopped cluster beans or green beans
  • 2-3 dried red chillies
  • 1/2 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1-2 tablespoons of oil for cooking
  • The paruppu usili is a traditional and comforting dish in every Tamilian household. This dish is mainly made with vegetables such as French beans, cluster beans, etc.

    This South Indian dish is basically a blend of ground lentils and vegetables. “Paruppu” means dal wherein “Usli” means crumbled.

    2. Further, steam the dal paste in a steamer or pressure cooker for 15-20 minutes or until cooked. Once it’s cooked, let it cool down and crumble into small pieces.
    3. Next, heat 1-2 tablespoons of oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dried red chilies, and asafoetida. Let them splutter for a few seconds.
    4. Additionally, add the chopped cluster beans or green beans and sauté for a few minutes until they are cooked but still slightly crunchy.
    5. Add the crumbled dal to the pan and mix well with the vegetables. Add salt to taste and mix again.
    6. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until everything is well combined.
    7. Serve hot as a side dish with sambar or rasam.
