What Is Psoriasis?

It is a chronic autoimmune condition that helps the body to speed up the growth cycle of the skin cells. Thus, this overgrowth of cells can lead to scaly, itchy, patchy, and discomfort. Moreover, Psoriasis is of different types which may vary. Thus, its scale is in the form of silver patches which typically occurs on hands, knees, scalp, elbows, etc.

However, there is no scientific backing on the exact triggers of this skin condition. Thus, many researchers have a general idea about the factors based on their decades of observations. It may occur due to genetic and environmental factors.

Also, people with a family history of psoriasis are most likely to develop this condition.

So, let’s understand the connection between psoriasis and diet in the next section.

Relationship Between Diet And Psoriasis

In such conditions, diet helps you to manage your symptoms to a greater extent. But you have to be mindful of your diet. This medical or skin disorder is associated with other conditions such as obesity, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, etc.

Moreover, many food items can also trigger its symptoms and may worsen its condition.

However, unbalanced dietary food habits, higher consumption of fat, and a lower fiber intake may also worsen psoriasis symptoms.

Thus, there are several studies that have shown that certain foods like alcohol, simple sugars, and saturated fatty acids may trigger inflammation by stimulating reactive oxygen species and related pathways.

So, therefore, it’s crucial to work with your doctor or nutritionist to determine the right diet and supplements according to the severity of your condition.

Allowed Food For Psoriasis

So, the foods that can be easily included in the diet plan for Psoriasis are:

1. Whole Grains

Whole grains are carbohydrates and contain a lower glycemic index. Thus, this makes them a good source of fiber, minerals, and vitamins. Moreover, food that has a low glycemic index can also help reduce inflammation and, consequently, the symptoms of psoriasis.

Also, in low glycemic diet plan whole grain plays an important role.

Examples Of Whole Grains: Whole-grain bread, Brown or Parboiled Rice, Corn, Oats, etc.

2. Fatty Fish

Fatty fish is a crucial source of omega-3, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Also, fish, in general, is a good source of B complex vitamins, vitamin A, and minerals like selenium. Thus, all these help reduce wounds, erythema, scaling skin, and itchiness.

Examples: Hilsa, Tuna, Sardine, Trout, and Salmon.

3. Seeds

Being high in fiber, seeds also have a lot of vitamins and minerals, like vitamin E, selenium, and magnesium.

Also, seeds help to reduce reactions within the inflammatory process and decrease psoriasis symptoms.

Examples: Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Flaxseed, Chia, etc.

4. Fruit

Including fruits in your diet increases the amount of fiber in it. Also, through fruits, the deficiency of vitamins and minerals such as the B complex, vitamins C and E, potassium, magnesium, and even flavonoids can be covered up.

Moreover, including these types of vitamins also helps to heal skin lesions faster.

Examples: orange, lemon, cherry, kiwi, banana, avocado, mango, papaya, grapes, blackberries, and raspberries.

5. Vegetables And Leafy Greens

Vegetables provide a good amount of fiber and are also a great source of vitamins A and C and folic acid. However, it also acts as an antioxidant, reducing inflammation and, consequently, the symptoms of psoriasis.

Examples: carrot, sweet potato, beetroot, spinach, and broccoli.

Foods For Psoriasis To Avoid

So, there are several categories of inflammatory food items that can make psoriasis symptoms worse.

1. Alcohol

Excessive consumption of alcohol makes your liver work overtime. In this case, it has to produce chemicals to metabolize the alcohol, which can lead to long-term inflammation.

However, alcohol can also damage the good bacteria in your gut. Thus, this leads to inflammation in your colon and intestines.

2. Dairy

Many dairy products are high in fat, which leads to inflammation. The dairy products that contain cow’s milk also contain casein, a protein that some people have trouble digesting.

Also, people who are lactose intolerant don’t have enough of the digestive enzyme lactase. Also, chronic gastrointestinal irritation from such conditions can make inflammation worse. And for a few people, psoriasis symptoms improve when they cut dairy from their diet.

3. Refined Carbohydrates

Refined carbohydrates are highly processed. However, these refined carbohydrates have been stripped of fiber and whole grains and tend to contain a lot of sugar. Thus, this causes your blood sugar to spike.

Moreover, refined carbohydrates also increase advanced glycation end products. So, these are the substances in the human blood that lead to inflammation.

4. Saturated Fats And Trans Fats

The presence of fats in red meat, cheese, fried food, margarine, fast food, and many processed snacks is known to trigger inflammation in the human body. Also, these fats in the body increase the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in your blood.

This is also called “bad cholesterol,” which is bad for this skin disorder.

5. Foods That Contain Gluten

In a few studies, it has been suggested that individuals with psoriasis tend to have higher rates of celiac disease. So, for people with celiac disease, gluten triggers an autoimmune response that causes the human body to attack tissues in the small intestine.

However, people with celiac disease need to avoid gluten completely. Though for some people, reducing gluten in their diet lessens psoriasis flare-ups.
