Sleep debt is the difference between the sleep you get and the sleep your body needs. If you need 7 hours but only sleep 5, you accumulate 2 hours of sleep debt. Over time, sleep debt can make waking up harder and lead to various health issues.

  • Recommended Sleep Duration: The average adult requires 7-7.5 hours of sleep per night, or approximately 49-52.5 hours per week. Sleeping this amount supports optimal physical and mental health.
  • Unhealthy Sleep Debt: Accumulating sleep debt over time (i.e., consistently sleeping less than 7-7.5 hours per night) may lead to negative health effects such as impaired concentration, mood swings, and increased risk of chronic diseases.
