Insights from state of your plate

The Pulse Of A Nation’s Plate

India’s intricate relationship with food is more than just sensory delight. It’s a barometer of our emotional, cultural, and social fabric. Fitelo’s recent nationwide survey of over 5,000 respondents uncovers how the state of our plate shifts with our life circumstances.

The Indian Diet – Where Do We Stand?

In India, the diet is often high in carbohydrates, with rice, wheat, and potatoes being staple foods in many households. However, protein intake tends to be low, especially in vegetarian diets, where legumes and lentils are sometimes not consumed in sufficient amounts.

Additionally, a review of research by NIH says that processed and packaged foods are becoming increasingly popular, contributing to unhealthy eating habits. Cultural and social factors also play a significant role in shaping the way people eat. The traditional meals are often heavy on carbs and lacking in balance.

Poor dietary choices have led to a rise in lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart conditions, and obesity. Despite an abundance of food, many people suffer from nutrient deficiencies due to a lack of balanced meals.

Unhealthy snacking, often high in sugar and unhealthy fats, contributes to weight gain and other health problems. It is crucial to focus on healthier food choices to improve overall well-being.

The Triggers and Influencers

Most people (58%) start contemplating weight loss when their wardrobe begins to pinch. While women are highly conscious, with 61% raising the alarm when their size changes, it’s the casual remarks from family and friends that trigger 46% of respondents.

Contrary to the belief that social media or celebrities drive health decisions, a significant 76% of people are swayed by their family, friends, and colleagues.

The Paradox of Celebration

As the festive season dawns, the survey highlights an unsettling trend: 57% celebrate achievements with foods high in sugar, salt, and fat. This dietary choice correlates with India’s worrying health statistics, including its title as the ‘Diabetes Capital’ of the world.

Emotional Eating: The Unseen Culprit

While celebration is one aspect, emotional turbulence is another. About 35%  admit to emotional eating during stressful times and 57% during family get-togethers, which often leads to a derailment of their health goals.

The Gender Divide

Interesting data emerges when we look at the gender split. For instance, 33% of women ‘stress-eat’ largely due to family responsibilities, as opposed to just 9% of men. Meanwhile, 35% of men are likely to deviate from their health goals during office parties.

Lifestyle Choices: A Dichotomy

While India has heartily adopted Western fast food, it hesitates to embrace Western fitness habits. Most Indians prefer light exercises (46%) or walks (55%), with a scanty 3% opting for swimming.

The Final Word

The ‘State of Your Plate’ study serves as a mirror to our societal choices and individual habits. It proves that achieving wellness is not just about technology or tools; it’s deeply rooted in our behavior and influenced by the people around us.

Our mission at Fitelo is to blend technology with human intelligence to guide you through a balanced life. With the right habits and a bit of movement, achieving health goals while enjoying your favorite foods is not just a dream but a reachable reality.
